EtnoAtlas.ro is an interactive ethnographic atlas dedicated to Romania's cultural heritage.

The project aims to bring into digital form ethnographic information as it was originally recorded during major research campaigns carried out in the 19th and 20th centuries. For now, the site allows the exploration of the geographic distribution of data related to traditional food; further ahead, it will be expanded with maps dedicated to other topics representative of Romania's ethnographic and ethnolinguistic heritage.

How it works

The site has two main sections: Maps and Localities.

The Maps can be accessed from the menu on the left, where two types of maps are available: attestation maps and terminology maps. Each map has an interactive legend displayed on the right. This lets you selectively display attestation periods for a given phenomenon, or, for terminology maps, show one or several terms at a time. The map, as displayed on screen, can be saved as a PNG file or shared. The map's data sheet, listing the localities included in the displayed map, can also be exported as a PDF.

The Compare Maps section, accessible on the left below the Search field, allows the simultaneous display of elements from up to 3 maps. Once the Compare button is pressed, you can choose which maps to include in the comparative analysis.

The Localities section contains a page for every locality included on the site. For each locality, a synthesis of the available data is compiled. As with maps, the data for a given locality can also be exported as a PDF.

Bibliographic sources

For now, EtnoAtlas.ro hosts the full content of Materii prime alimentare (Cătălin Alexa), published in 2024 — an ethnographic synthesis based on information drawn from the questionnaires of the Romanian Ethnographic Atlas, part of the archive of the "Constantin Brăiloiu" Institute of Ethnography and Folklore, Bucharest. Going forward, sources will be diversified to cover as broad a range of ethnographic topics as possible, drawing on primary data relevant to research from the 19th and 20th, as well as the 21st century.

Privacy and data use

EtnoAtlas uses statistical analytics services to understand how the site is used and to improve the browsing experience.

The data collected is used exclusively for statistical purposes and does not allow direct identification of visitors. The platform does not require account creation and does not collect personal data through forms.
